Health, Medicine, and Community Welfare in the Global South

We are seeking manuscripts for a series dedicated to exploring the medical landscape in the Global South. This series aims to illuminate the personal and professional challenges faced by medical practitioners and to share inspiring stories of resilience and dedication. We invite contributions from doctors, nurses, pharmacists, midwives, and other healthcare professionals to share their everyday experiences and insights. This is an opportunity to enrich the understanding of community health issues and to showcase the vital work being done in these regions. If you are a medical practitioner based in the Global South or working with immigrant communities abroad and are interested in contributing a full manuscript or article, please contact us with a brief expression of interest and a short bio. Possible formats: Literary Memoir Personal experience memoir Professional memoir Teaching memoir Transformational memoir Event memoir Thematic essay collections Thematic Volumes: The series is organized the into several themes: Pediatric Perspectives: Recollections from those who care for children. Possible Titles: Beyond the Stethoscope: Pediatric Pathways and More. Pediatric Pathways: Caring for Our Youngest Patients. In Their Hands: A Midwife’s Journey Rural Medicine: Challenges and triumphs of providing healthcare in remote areas. Possible Titles: Rural Remedies: Medicine in Remote Areas The Doctor’s Tale: Life and Lessons in Rural Healthcare Pulse of Compassion: Doctors’ Experiences in Healing Global Health: Experiences from doctors working in international settings or with global health initiatives e.g., Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) or Doctors Without Borders. Possible Titles: Global Health Diaries: Doctors Without Borders Lifelines: Doctors’ Reflections on Medicine and Humanity. Healing Voices from the Frontlines: Doctors’ Stories from the Frontlines Future topics or themes would include: Emergency Room Chronicles: Stories from the fast-paced, high-stakes environment of the ER. Geriatric Perspectives: Recollections from those who care for the elderly. Oncology Insights: Experiences from doctors working with cancer patients. Structure of Each Book Each book is structured to provide a comprehensive view of the medical field: Introduction: Overview of the theme and its significance. Personal Narratives: First-hand accounts from doctors, each chapter focusing on a different story. Interviews: Q&A sessions with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Reflections and Lessons: Doctors share what they’ve learned from their experiences and how it has shaped their practice. Diverse Perspectives Each book will ensure a wide range of voices and experiences are integrated: e.g., Gender and Ethnic Diversity: Highlight stories from women, minorities, and doctors from various cultural backgrounds. Specialties: Include doctors from a variety of medical specialties. Career Stages: From medical students and residents to seasoned professionals. Additional Elements Each title will include supplementary materials to enrich the reader’s experience e.g., Photographs: Images that capture moments from the doctors’ stories. Medical Illustrations (if possible): Diagrams or sketches relevant to the narratives. Patient Perspectives: Occasionally feature stories from patients to provide a holistic view. Other Elements (in-House) Digital and Interactive Components Community and Outreach Kalahari Press will deploy the series to foster a community of readers and contributors: Workshops and Events: Kalahari Press will host writing workshops for doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and events where contributors can share their stories. Charitable Outlook: Kalahari Press will deploy a portion of proceeds from the book sales towards healthcare-related charities and scholarships for medical students facing challenges. Call for Poems: Health, Medicine, the Clinic, and Self-Care Submission Deadline: December 18, 2024 Kalahari Press invites poets to contribute to a special anthology exploring themes of health, medicine, and self-care. We seek poems that are powerful, reflective, and evocative, capturing the diverse experiences within the healthcare and medical fields. This anthology aims to include the voices of citizens, patients, doctors, nurses, caregivers, and communities as they navigate the complexities of health in contemporary life. Whether depicting moments of introspection about health, experiences in clinical settings, the chaos of emergency rooms, recovery journeys, or ethical dilemmas in modern medicine, we welcome poems that bring these stories to life. Suggested Themes: – Contemplations of the healthy body and the feeling of being in robust health – Experiences related to health, such as everyday health, uncommon health events, healing, exercise, and sports – Experiences within hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings – The patient-doctor relationship – Emotional and psychological dimensions of illness – The intersection of medicine and culture – Urban pollution, sanitation, hygiene, and their effects on health – Climate impacts on health, e.g., Harmattan, heat waves, urban floods – Ethical challenges in medicine – The science and art of healing – Public health crises and responses – The role of healthcare workers in society, including appreciation for health care workers, midwives, pharmacists, etc. – The role of physical exercise and sports in health – Living with congestion, noise, urban pollution, and waste disposal – Any related topic Submission Guidelines: – Length: Up to 50 lines per poem – Format: Submit your poem in a single Word document or PDF – Language: Submissions are accepted in all languages. Please include an English or French translation if needed – Multiple Submissions: Up to three poems per writer – Eligibility: Open to poets of all backgrounds, both emerging and established Selected poems will be featured in the anthology *The Pulse of Care: An Anthology of Poems on Health, Medicine, and the Clinic*. Contributors will receive a complimentary copy of the book and an honorarium.
